March TMD

March TMD was a traction maintenance Depot located near March and opened as a steam depot 31B in the mid 1880's. I will not go into to much detail as there are plenty of other sites that deal just with the history of the depot. 1973 saw the the new depot code of MR used. The depot was closed in 1992 with the work it used to do being closed down also.

However, in 2003 Whitemoor yard re-opened on the 18th April 2008 with GBRF reopening the depot, which is now in the former goods shed in the former down yard to the east of March station.

I am unsure as to what can be seen there these days as It has been a long time since I visited the location, However March became famous or infamous in the late 1980's as the storage place for the withdrawn Class 45's. I was there on the 28th December 1988, so below is a list of what was there.

Not all are in the scrap line, some were on the TMD itself, I am sure that these days you would just not be allowed to wander amongst the line of locomotives as we were,  if you did in the line of 60's at Toton, someone would soon be there to question what you were doing. The late 1980's were a time when wandering around was not really frowned upon, of course as long  as you were being sensible and respectful.

45132 sits forlornly at the head of a line of beaten up and stripped peaks before being removed and going to there final destination. Many stripped and broken windows, removed equipment and holes in the bodies, done on purpose to remove items or by vandals just because they can. It is a sad sight really.
